the threatening thud of
adolescent shoe
on air-busting football
in ancient echo streets and
the moped buzz of
buzz-cut hair-cut and
the perfumed packages of
tight jeans and
mouths lip-served with
chewing gum smacks
and cigarette casualness:

all this is pressed down
under the long shadows from
the sun across from africa
under the high blue light
blasting the yellow rooftops
and the smell of the atlantic and
gibraltar rocking just to the south-east
as I toss and yearn
in these nights of humid cold
and freezing warmth.
